Miss Trimble's Trapdoor series by Lori Jordan-Rice

By now you know Kenz loves to read as much as I do. And when I can sneak some really fun information in there while she is reading, then all the better. When I came across the books "Miss Trimble's Trapdoor" I just knew I had to have them for her.

The books are written in a way that kids can learn while reading and actually remember what they have learnt. We received two books "Miss Trimble's Trapdoor" and "Miss Trimble's Trapdoor: The Perserverance of Christopher Columbus".  The books are beautifully illustrated and are about 73 pages long. MacKenzie devoured both in no time flat, and passed them along to her classmates at school.

In Miss Trimble's Trapdoor you meet Tyler Thompson who seems to never know the answers to Miss Trimble's questions. Then one day while sitting in class he discovers that his desk has something special under it. When he goes through the basement he finds a talking dog named Barnabas. Barnabas is guarding some magical books. Tyler uses the books to travel through time with the aid of Barnabas, Tyler has adventures that help learn and remember all kinds of information. When he gets back to his desk, he finds he can now answer Miss Trimble's questions!

In Miss Trimble's Trapdoor:The Perserverance of Christopher Columbus Tyler learns all about Christopher Columbus. He finds out that Christopher Columbus did not have an easy time getting to the Americas.Tyler is also trying out for the school basketballl team and having to give an oral report on CC.  When he sees everything that the great explorer had to go through and overcome, he realizes that he can do anything he sets his mind too. With a little effort and a lot of keeping on, anything can be accomplished! MacKenzie immediately asked me what "perserverance" meant, and I explained to her its meaning. By the time she finished the book she completely understood. Even I enjoyed reading a little bit more about Christopher Columbus.

One of my favorite things about both books was that at the end there is a suggested reading list so that the learning can go further. In the Christopher Columbus book there is a timeline to show where he went and how he got to us. MacKenzie absolutely loved the maps at the very end, and it helped her see where Christopher Columbus has sailed from.

These books are great gifts for your little reader and also would make an excellent gift for a classroom reading corner.
